The effect of sleep deprivation is similar to the effects of stress on the immune system. The National Sleep Foundation describes this in a new study: “Severe sleep loss jolts the immune system into action, reflecting the same type of immediate response shown during exposure to stress.”
They continue to say, “Other [studies] have shown that sleep helps sustain the functioning of the immune system, and that chronic sleep loss is a risk factor for immune system impairment.”
The Mayo Clinic website addresses this lack of sleep and the immune system and recommends how much sleep is needed. “Aim to get at least seven hours of sleep a night so that you have the energy to tackle everyday demands.”
Healthy Sleep Habits
Good sleep hygiene is key to optimal health. Not only does it help the immune system, it affects diet, mood and temperament, energy levels, and weight management. There are many steps one can take to improve sleep, including these suggestions from the American Sleep Association:
- Maintain a regular routine.
- Avoid naps if possible.
- Don’t watch TV or read in bed.
- Drink caffeinated drinks with caution
- Exercise regularly
- Have a comfortable pre-bedtime routine.
